​Winter Solstice

Today, it is the Winter Solstice here in Australia. Depending on where one lives, there will be approximately nine and a half hours of daylight, making this the shortest day of the year.

Last year, I spent the Winter Solstice in Queensland, and the following photos were taken at Woodgate Beach where I was staying.

Memories

On this day last year, my wife and I were on our return trip home from spending some winter days in warmer climes. We arrived at Woodgate Beach in time for the sunset.

Jawbone Reserve – 2

Continuing my walk along the Bay Trail, there was no shortage of water birds on display.

 

Dusky Moorhen,
(Gallinula tenebrosa)

The Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) was nestled down in the grass and hiding in the shadows.

 

 

Chestnut Teal,
(Anas castanea)

The Chestnut Teals (Anas castanea) were all inactive and enjoying some quiet time.

Black Swan,
(Cygnus atratus)

This Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) swam up to me. I suspect it associates people with food and does not have any fear of humans.

Little Pied Cormorant,
(Microcarbo melanoleucos)

This Little Pied Cormorant (Microcarbo melanoleucos) flew by and I had no time for composing the picture, it was a quick snap and hope for the best. A little way down the path I found it settled on a rock, however as you can see in the picture below, it did contemplate moving on as I approached. Once I had the photo I wanted I continued on and it relaxed.

As I continued my walk a Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) flew by however the photo I got of it in flight was blurred. However, I did manage a shot of it landing.

Eastern Great Egret

A couple of days ago, I was standing on the southern shore of Lake Colac, when an Eastern Great Egret (Ardea modesta) flew by to land just in front of me. Suddenly it changed its mind and flew off.

The following photograph is my favourite, and the outstanding one from the burst I snapped.
